What a wonderful celebration we had on 22 September, organised by the Social Events Team (Jude, Hilary, Lynne, Peter, Helen, Angela, Janet and Jacky) to celebrate u3a Week. The theme this year was “Expanding Horizons”. We certainly entered into the spirit, with our new display board advertising all the groups available to our members. The posters are a perfect example of the hidden talents our members have, thank you Nigel Mackintosh. And did you hear him sing? There was showcasing by Exploring Science, Dry Kurling, Chess and the newly reformed Boccia group, together with the programme of entertainment for the morning. As well as introducing the programme throughout the morning, Hilary Jones challenged everyone to try something new in the coming months by looking at the groups list on the website www.flintshire.u3asite.uk, to find a new interest. Or maybe you have an interest that isn’t included in the 60 plus groups, that others would enjoy. Please consider asking the Groups Liaison for help with how to start YOUR new group by emailing groups@flintshire-u3a.co.uk

As the event coincided with Singing for Pleasure Group’s usual meeting day, it naturally incorporated much of the group’s regular activity and members therefore played a significant role in the proceedings. The programme included several well-known songs by Singing for Pleasure, an unusual Short Story, read by Sue Wilcox from Writers Together, a great performance by the talented Music Live group, followed by a very good short play performed by the Drama Group, involving a dodgy antique dealer! And last but not least we enjoyed some nostalgia by listening and dancing to songs from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s played by the Jukebox group. Tea and cakes were served by our brilliant Social Events Team to the 160 members who attended. Logistically challenging but thanks to all of you for following the instructions and queueing beautifully. Kath Swale and Chris Best from the STAR group were supporting too and worked hard to ensure things ran smoothly. And finally, a record of the whole event was kept by Dave Thomas from the Digital Photography group. Can you spot yourself enjoying the entertainment in one of the photos in this newsletter or via the link on the first page of the website under Latest Notices www.flintshire.u3asite.uk ?
If you were unable to attend or didn’t manage to get a place on this occasion, do look out for future events organised by the Social Events Team. They do work very hard throughout the year to pull all the social events together. Please regularly check your emails (don’t forget to check in your spam) and on the website or ask your Group Coordinator for information about upcoming events.
